What is Play Therapy and how can it help?

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a way children and young people can express themselves using a variety of different mediums in the play therapy toolkit. Children often find it hard to put words to how they are feeling. When play is used, no words are necessary. Exploration naturally happens through the play in the safe holding environment the play therapist creates. Play makes sense to children, they can discover and rehearse their understanding of themselves and events, the rehearsal allows difficulties to be worked through and coped with, this can lead to healthier and happier outcomes.

The Toolkit

Within the play therapy toolkit there are a range of different creative materials. Art and crafts, drawing and painting, playdoh and clay, sand tray and small-play miniatures, puppets, dolls-house, movement and musical instruments.

Therapeutic storytelling and creative visualisation are also used when appropriate.
